Member of the Month: Wesley Stevens

Welcome to our newest member of the month interview! When selecting a member of the month for Academic Grappling, we look for effort, empathy, personal improvement, and someone who inspires others through their authentic interactions. We are thrilled to have Wesley Stevens this month! As member of the month, Wesley was allowed to wear the much-coveted AG Belt, sign the back of it, and have a polaroid printed and hung on the wall of the gym. Learn more about our friend Wesley and their BJJ journey below:

How long have you been training BJJ?

In pure BJJ, since 2021. Previous to that, most of my submission fighting experience was in Jeet Kune Do Grappling (which is mostly Judo and CACC) and going to open mats at friend's gyms like Brewjitsu.

Why did you join Academic Grappling?

As we were coming out of the Pandemic, Frank Dennis was telling me that his friend Jared was starting a BJJ program at a Muay Thai gym in Fishers. Turns out Jared was hella cool. The rest is history.

What’s your favorite part of being a member of Academic Grappling?

I am in a space where I can be myself without fear of shunning or assault. It's not as common anymore, but not every gym is safe for queer folks like Academic Grappling is.

I also love the diverse set of knowledge that AG coaches deliver.

What is currently your favorite technique in Jiu-Jitsu?

I've been having a lot of fun with the head scissors and footsweeps.

How do you define success?

Pushing oneself towards continuous exploration. It doesn't mean knowing every technique, but mastering the art for your needs.

Who inspires you, in Jiu-Jitsu or any other aspect of your life?

Mycelial networks, kung fu, sumo tournaments, my friends

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Show up and train as much as you can, but be sure to take rest days. Don't train on a sprain. Physical and mental recovery are essential. Martial arts are a lifelong endeavor.

Do you have any fun/funny stories from your time training BJJ?

I think it's funny that Jared hasn't kicked my ass yet for saying “Bedtime for Bonzo” on the rare occasion I cradle him.

What is your current occupation? How did you get into it? Do you enjoy it?

I edit training manuals and freelance edit books, scripts, and poetry. I also teach kung fu on the side and begun coaching takedowns at AG. I'm basically living my dream, but in a garbage economy. #seizethemeans

What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I've been to every state on the East Coast at least once.

What’s the last book you read?

There Will Be Fire by Rory Carroll

What’s something you love to do outside of work or training?

Cook lots of food

If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Grits

What’s one thing about you that you feel really sums up who you are as a person?

I overthink a lot, but sometimes that's a good thing.
